Hydrocolloid dressing is a special kind of wound dressing used in the treatment of mildly exuding wounds, like minor burns or bed sores. These dressings are waterproof, and unlike simpler dressings, they provide a moist and insulating environment to promote wound healing.
The inner layer contains gel-forming agents such as carboxymethylcellulose, gelatin, and pectin. This layer absorbs exudate (drainage containing white blood cells and proteins) to maintain a moist healing environment, which accelerates recovery and reduces scar formation.
The outer polyurethane film layer shields the wound from bacteria and debris. These dressings are user-friendly, allowing for easy washing and painless removal, making them ideal for sensitive skin and pediatric use. They can remain in place for up to a week, reducing the frequency of dressing changes.
